Running is an extremely strenuous sport. Participants are known to be extremely competitive. However, as a result of this competitiveness, may participants and athletes find themselves dealing with injuries. These injuries may occur at any time, which makes knowing them and learning how to deal with them is all the more critical. Injuries during running are usually caused by an increase in activity or some case careless motion.
Most runners experience a love-hate relationship with their feet. The mixed feelings are because the feet are taking the brunt of the exercise and training, which usually results in blisters or aching feet. The feet are one of the most complex parts of your body. The complexity is due to the network of bones, ligaments, and tissue that is present in the foot. One of the most common foot injuries is Plantar Fasciitis.
One of the most dreaded injuries that a runner could come down with is the Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis is caused by the overuse of the Plantar Fascia tendon. The Plantar Fascia is a tendon the runs along the length of the bottom of your foot. Usually caused by improper shoes or the sudden increase in training frequency, this injury consists of sharp stabbing pain. However, one of the issues with this injury is that the treatment is ongoing. Unfortunately, this means that those who are prone to Plantar Fasciitis must continue stretching their feet and roll the affected area on a tennis ball or a frozen golf ball/can.
Stress fractures are prevalent amongst athletes. They are also fractures that usually occur to a group of bones at the same time. Stress fractures are caused by injury to the metatarsals. As a slow building issue, it is effortless to think of the injury as something minor. That is until a sharp pain emanates from the bone fissure. Although it is hard to distinguish the injury between tendonitis or bone, it can be easily found on an MRI scan. To test if you have the stress fracture is to place a tuning fork against the foot, the vibrations that are caused by the fork will cause the bones to rattle making the pain intense. Another test for a stress fracture that you can complete at home is to hop with the injured foot if the impact causes pain as well, you have likely got your answer.
Tendons are present in the foot and play a significant role in keeping all the small bones moving while still being connected. They are extensions of your calf muscles, and they run along the top of your feet. The reason for the location of these tendons is that they help pull your toes and straighten your foot. However, this injury is the inflammation of the muscles in your foot. The pain closely resembles that of the stress fractures, but a simple test can be conducted to find the injury. Having someone press on your toes as you rise them is an excellent start to isolate the pain. The causes of the inflammation in the tendons can be traced to improper footwear and muscle aches. Stretching your calf muscles and Achilles can help in recovery.
