Which Is More Useful: Running or Walking?
You have probably heard the saying that running burns a lot of calories and helps you to lose weight faster. But if you are not a big enthusiast of sports, you have asked yourself at least once is running better than walking? Which of these activities is healthier? What other benefits you can receive from these activities?
The researchers conducted a study that measured how many calories people burn when they walk and run. 12 men and 12 women participated in this research and they had to be walking and running ran on a treadmill for 1.6 km. Men burned an average of 124 kcal while running and 88 kcal while walking. Meanwhile, women burned 105 kcal while running and 74 kcal while walking. It should be noted that the number of calories burned by men is higher due to the higher body weight.
When we are walking, the legs are straight, and the center of gravity remains stable and directly above the legs. Meanwhile, the movement of running is jumps from one leg to another and with each jump, the center of gravity rises, and when the leg is placed on the ground, the center descends. This constant change of the position of the center of gravity requires a lot of strength because it is necessary to resist the gravity.
However, the number of calories indicated previously is not a number of actually burned calories as it shows us how many specific calories were burnt during the workout, and this number includes the calories that were burned during the rest. In the study, the number of actually burned calories for men were 105 kcal. while running and 52 kcal. While walking. The numbers for women were 91 kcal. while running, and 43 kcal. while walking. This means that the running helps us to burn two times more calories than walking.
The researchers at the University of Cambridge claim that running can not only improve the memory, but also increase the ability to think. British neurologists have found that it is enough to run several times a week to irritate the brain in a positive way and improve the mental powers. The results of the study show that hundreds of thousands of new brain cells grow in a brain after a few days of running. Their amount is related to the formation of memories and the capabilities to think.
The memory is activated after running, events are not mixed, and other cognitive abilities of a person are improved also. This study is expected to help to find many new ways to slow the deterioration of mental abilities and help many older persons to stay capable for a longer time.
